To contextualize her life and work, it is important to understand the purpose and goals of the Négritude movement. Since Vichy officials censored all material they deemed subversive at the time, the Tropiques editors were forced to camouflage their publication as a journal of West Indian folklore. This vocabulary, highly influenced by the work of André Breton, along with the Surrealist practice of automatic writing, aided Suzanne and fellow Tropiques contributors, René Ménil and Aimé Césaire, in their articulation of the essence of Martinican identities.
